But why hold onto these pieces? Why keep these pieces long enough for them to turn into family heirlooms and vintage pieces? And what is the best way to care for them? You’re in luck, that’s exactly what we are going to be talking about today!
Vintage pieces tell a story and a history all on their own. They reflect the culture and the period in which they were created. Materials used along with the techniques used at the time can date a piece just by looking at it. Like some animals and traditions, materials and techniques go extinct or die out with a lack of materials at hand our with the artisans themselves. Historians and history buffs alike can date pieces based on when certain materials ran out or when an artisan passed and took their skills with them. Vintage pieces carry the trends and popularity of pop culture of their time, and what was culturally popular. It’s like looking at a picture of the past or stepping back in time without having to read anything or move from where you’re observing your pieces. It can help you understand the culture it came from and the significance the piece held at the time.
Outside of historical importance, an heirloom and a vintage piece can carry memories of loved ones, the history of your family, and where you came from. Why was this particular piece so important to your family member? What drew them to buy it? Did it celebrate a special occasion? Was it give to them as a special gift? All of those questions and memories can be carried in a vintage or heirloom piece. Every time you wear or look at these pieces, all of these wonderful memories and thoughts of your loved ones can be remembered, cherished, and carried with you.
To take it one step further, antique, vintage, and heirloom pieces are starting to take a huge place in the fashion industry. A resurgence in their popularity has been seen in the last few years and it continues to grow. These pieces are timeless. Even though we have seen a rise in their popularity, there is a big reason for that. Well crafted pieces made with high-quality materials don’t go out of style. Vintage pieces can also support the environment. You’re reusing something beautiful and helping the environment by not disturbing it. The quality of a vintage piece is also outstanding. The masters that made these pieces are the reasons why we exist today and why we know how to create as we have been since before 1990! These masters taught us. There is a reason why they were famous, their skill and artistry had never been seen before, and once it was introduced everyone had to try making something similar. What also makes these pieces so special is that they are one of a kind items, few to none with have a piece like yours. These pieces also always pair well with modern fashion and contemporary designs to show a sleek sense of contrast.
Now that you know the importance of the pieces you are coming across, inheriting, or being given, it’s time to understand the do’s and don’ts of their care.
