One of the most popular types of earrings has been around a lot longer than you might have guessed and has been through many different transformations in its life. We are excited to add our twist to its very unique and colorful history with a splash of Charleston!
January has brought in some incredible weather for the Lowcountry and the recent release of one of our favorite earrings, our Rice Bead Hoops! Little did we know that the hoop earring had so much more history than just an incredible fashion statement that took the world by storm in the 60’s and 70’s. With the creation of these new beautiful pieces, we decided to take a look into the rich history of hoop earrings and were pretty excited about what we found! In our August 2019 blog, we talked about the history of Charleston Rice Beads and their importance to the world of jewelry and their impact on the fashion and style industry. We decided to take the classic hoop and combine them with our Rice Beads, and that was the birth of our beautiful new line. Rice beads are very commonly found in necklace and bracelet form across the Lowcountry. With this new collection, we went above and beyond and came up with this beautiful new twist. Ironically, both Rice Beads and Hoop Earrings had a similar rise in popularity in the 60’s and 70’s, just as they are right now. We are very excited to add our page in history to these iconic and beautiful earrings.
You can now find five different kinds of Charleston Rice Bead Hoop earrings on our website and in our shop in downtown Charleston.

We’ve talked about the history of the Charleston Rice Beads, but what about hoop earrings? What’s the history there? It is said that hoop earrings originated in Africa, dating back to Nubia. In ancient Egyptian times, both men and women wore hoop earrings. Egyptian royalty wore gold hoops for the style and to show off their wealth and power. They also believed that hoop earrings enhanced one’s beauty. They were known to be buried wearing their hoop earrings to enhance their beauty in the afterlife. In our current generations, and those who saw their rise in popularity in the 60’s and 70’s, many see hoop earrings as a form of racial identity, others as style and personality. But whatever the opinion, they have always been used as bold statements.
It is also said that the oldest hoop earrings belonged to a Sumerian woman who lived in 2500 B.C. In 1500 B.C. everyone was said to have worn hoop earrings, including cats. As the history books continued to be written, gold hoop earrings were worn and used as power symbols in many cultures throughout history. Of course, there is a classic Pirate gold hoop earring. This wasn’t just a fashion statement for them or a proof of their pirate booty. They were worn by pirates between 1650 and 1730 to make sure they would receive a proper burial and funeral when they died.
As we mentioned above, hoop earrings have always been used as a bold statement. Sometimes they have had a powerful and incredible reputation, while in the 90’s and early 2000’s they weren’t receiving the best feedback. Today, the trend is coming back stronger than ever with very positive reinforcements. If you’ve been interested in this growing trend but still don’t know if hoop earrings are the thing for you, think about it this way:
